dear blog,
when i don't eat for awhile and i get hungry, i get really irritable and grumpy. i like to call this "hangry" (hungry+angry duh). (woah, i just typed hungry so many times that it looks weird now. hungry hungry hungry hungry hungry...anyways). not just like "i'm hungry, so things are kind of bothersome." its more like "don't talk to me, don't look at me, don't think about me, or i'll bite your head off." this malady has a simple solution (food) but its funny because a lot of times i don't even realize this is the case. the other night harriet was over and i was hangry and didn't even notice and she was like, "rochelle, have you eaten recently?" (imagine this in like a motherly "rochelle, have you taken your vitamins today?" sorty of tone.) since i was hangry at that moment i didn't think it was that funny, but now i think it is hilarious that she knew that. this is not something i necessarily like about myself, this is just something weird/quirky about myself that i want to remember. yay for using my blog as a journal?
love,
rochelle
p.s. i also get weird when i'm super-tired and while i am not currently hangry, i am currently super-tired. i'm pretty sure i'll read this tomorrow and be like "why the heck did you write that, rochelle?"
p.p.s. i cut 6 inches off of my hair today!
p.p.p.s. miss jessica callahan survived the mcat this week. i am so proud of her! and she bought me lunch at p.f.changs after. isn't it supposed to be the other way around? i owe you lunch, chica.
p.p.p.p.s. happy birthday, jowanza!

8. babysitting
9. researching wedding stuff... did i mention HARRIET IS ENGAGED?
10. playing badminton (and losing) (btdubs i was pretty sure it was "badmitton" but the computer seems to disagree. i was also pretty sure that the shuttlecock was called a "birdie" but the directions and the Brits also seem to disagree)
11. playing phase 10/ other card games
12. cuddling my dogs
13. pinterest (don't judge me, okay?)
14. reading books... yes i did one constructive thing. actually 3 because i read 3 books. say wha?
15. riding the ski lift at sundance (during a full moon, no less)

merging
dear blog,
today i was driving to provo to come over to jessica's and on 8th north two lanes suddenly merged into one. i HATE when this happens because usually people are so mean about letting you merge in front of them into their lane. as i nervously clicked my blinker on and turned my head to check my blind spot, i saw a well-used car driven by a greasy looking gentleman with a cigarette in his mouth. before i could even think he started to slow down and generously waved me in front of him. surprised and extremely grateful, i waved to him my thanks, but i really wish i could have done more for this lovely man who showed me a great kindness today. i seriously love being pleasantly surprised by people like that.
so, thank you, lovely smoker, for making my day.
love,
rochelle
p.s. HARRY POTTER TOMORROW. CANNOT WAIT.

sushi q
dear blog,
last week our dear friend, susie, was staying with us and it was so lovely to have her! susie is like an aunt to us even though we aren't reallly related. susie gives the greatest hugs, she is so loving and she is so much fun to be around! we drove up the canyon on sunday evening and it was delightful. we drove the alpine loop and went up to cascade springs and came out through american fork canyon. also, susie is a fabulous photographer, and while there are no pictures here of her, here are some pictures that she took for your viewing pleasure.
love,
rochelle
p.s. here is a picture of susie and me a couple years ago. she is so fabulous! i wish she lived closer!

patriotism
dear blog,
(i know this is a little late, seeing as independence day has passed and all, but W.)
okay, so for the last week or so i have been thinking a lot a lot a lot about what it means to be a patriot (specifically an american patriot, seeing as i am an american citizen). the dictionary defines a patriot as one who loves her country and supports its authority and interests. wikipedia says a patriot is one who feels a strong support for their country. both of these sound really positive, but often in real life i feel like people who are self-proclaimed patriots are in support of their country in favor of it dominating all other countries. i feel that so many have hateful and negative attitudes in the name of patriotism. for example, harriet's friend from england, beth was visiting this last weekend and she told me that in fast & testimony meeting in harriet's ward some guy got up and said in his testimony that america is the choice land above all other lands and he went on and on about how america is greater than everywhere else in the world. it is attitudes like this that just infuriate me. i feel like a true patriot would never say anything like that. i feel like people also view politicians and government officials as patriots and i have a hard time swallowing that as well. i feel like these people are most often in pursuit of their own agenda. they are supporters of what is best for themselves, not what is best for the country and its citizens, and they love power and themselves, not their country. and so often these people parade around in powerful positions and make selfish/strategic decisions in the name of patriotism. i do not want to be labeled as a patriot if i will be in the same category as greedy people who are only interested in monetary gain, people who accept and even rejoice in the death of another, or people who think that their culture is the one and only best culture.
that being said...
if a patriot really is someone who loves and supports the greater good of their country, then (i'de like to think that) i am a patriot. on the 4th of july i was doing fireworks in the street with my family as were a great number of people up and down the street and there were big booms and sparks and smoke going up all over the place and it even started raining and i thought, probably for the first time, about what it must have been like to have actually physically battled for freedoms that i take for granted on a daily basis. i am so grateful for those that fought for that so that i can enjoy life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, the freedoms of speech and religion, the right to vote, etc. etc. i do love my country, but more than anything i am grateful for the opportunity to be a citizen and live in this choice land above all other lands (kidding). but in all seriousness, i really do get to enjoy freedoms and privileges that many individuals throughout the world do not get to enjoy. and although i think that america has a good amount of social and political problems, other countries experience problems on a much more serious and massive scale. and despite the fact that there are many things i do not like about america, i am definitely an american girl and there is no denying that.
so, america, i sure love you and i wish you a happy (belated) birthday.
love,
rochelle
p.s. this is a school house rock video about the preamble to the constitution. this is probably my favorite song.
